Department of Allied Health

   
 

The Department of Allied Health offers majors, concentrations, or certificates in the disciplines of Communication Sciences and Disorders, Health Services Management, and Medical Technology. Each curriculum prepares students in the preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic aspects of health care. Allied Health professionals work in: hospitals, health departments, commercial health insurance, nursing and personal care homes, physicians' offices, retirement villages, rehabilitation centers, educational institutions, private clinical laboratories, medical schools, and pharmaceutical companies. Our Medical Techology Program is fully accredited by the National Accredition Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS), 8410 W. Bryn Mawr Avenu, Suite 670, Chicago Illinois, (773)714-8880.

All Allied Health Programs require external clinical practicum or internship experiences at health care facilities:

  •  Hospitals
  •  Health departments
  •  Private and reference laboratories
  •  Nursing homes
  •  Human resources office
  •  Health maintenance offices
  •  Physicians' Offices

Allied Health students are eligible for national certification, licensure, or registration as:

  •  Registered Dieticians (RD) - American Dietetic Association (ADA)
  •  Registered Recorder Administrators (R.R.A.) - American Health
  •  Information Management Association (AHIMA)
  •  Medical Technologists MT (ASCP) - American Society for Clinical Pathologists (ASCP)
  •  Clinical Laboratory Scientists (CLS (NCA) - National Certifying Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NCA)

Allied Health students participate in the:

  •  Major's Club (FSN, HIM, HSM, and MT)
  •  Professional Organizations for each discipline
  •  Golden Key Honor Society
  •  Honors Program for Parson Scholars
  •  University Ambassadors' Program
  •  Norfolk State University Marching Spartans Band and Concert Choir
