General Botany

Course Description:
Introductory study of the basic principles of plant science, including comparative examination of morphology, physiology, chemistry, genetics, ecology and economic uses of major plants.

Credits: 4 Semester Hours

Prerequisites: BIO 110and BIO 110 Lab

Calculation of Lecture Grades:

* On-line aaactivities maybe assigned on information covered in the 5 units. These assignments will be made during lecture or via the course website. Due dates will be posted.

NOTE:

• The University Grade Scale will be used to determine final letter grade.
• The lowest passing grade for a course in the major is a C.
• A C- (minus) in this course is NOT a passing grade for Biology majors.

Course Objectives and Outlines :

1. Explain briefly what the scientific method is and what hypotheses are.
2. Name or identify a contribution to the development of botany as a science made by each of the following: Theophrastus Leeuwenhoek, Malpighi, Grew, van Belmont, and Linnaeus.
3. Know what the Doctrine of Signatures and associated herbals are.
4. Understand the major botanical disciplines and indicate briefly the particular aspect of botany with which each is concerned.

Course Requirements:

• Attendance Policy All students are expected to attend every class. In the event a student misses a class due to illness or a death in the family, a written statement from the appropriate administrative office will be needed. All students missing class are responsible for the material covered. It is solely up to instructor as to whether or not a student is to be excused from any activity.

• Use of Technology. This course will use technology. Students are expected to use technology in the classroom. Students are prohibited from browsing the internet during the class time. Student's caught browsing the internet at unapproved sites will be asked to leave the class and will receive a grade of "0" for any missed assignments given in their absences.

• Examinations and Quizzes: There will be several hourly examinations given in this course as well as several short quizzes, which will be given periodically. In addition, a comprehensive final examination will be given. No one will be excused from the final exam for any reason.

Procedure for Make-up examinations and quizzes:

Students missing an exam for ANY reason (including official University business, illness (with medical excuse), death in family) will need to arrange with the instructor a make-up exam. Documentation substantiating the missed exam has to be provided to the instructor the day that the student returns to class. No makeup quizzes will be given under any circumstances. Students with written documentation from the student health service may he excused from missed quizzes at the discretion of the instructor.

University Business:

All individuals that will miss a class, regardless of whether or not a test or quiz is to be give, must notify the instructor well in advance of their absence. UNIVERSITY BUSINESS DOES NOT INCLUDED EARLY OR LATE PLANE FLIGHTS BUS OR TRAIN RIDES. Students must not miss assignments due to travel considerations of any sort, and this especially includes leaving early or arriving back to campus late during holiday periods.

Academic Integrity Policy:

All students should exhibit academic honesty in all academic exercises and assignments. An incident of academic dishonesty occurs when a student commits any of the following acts:

Cheating :

Intentionally using or attempting to use unauthorized materials, information or study aids in any academic exercise, which includes all forms of work, submitted for credit or hours.

Fabrication:

Intentionally or unauthorized falsification or invention of any information or citation in an academic exercise without prior approval of the author.

Plagiarism:

The deliberate adoption or reproduction of ideas or words or statements of another person(s) as one's own, without acknowledgement.

GENERAL REGULATIONS:

• Attendance will be taken during each class/laboratory session. Reports submitted for experiments performed on a day that you were absent would neither be accepted nor graded. In addition, no credit will be given for quizzes or discussions of experiments conducted in your absence. Classes will begin at the scheduled time. I expect students to be in their seats ready to work. It is expected that you will arrive on time; however I realize that some may have justified reasons for arriving late. Please discuss them with me.

• All quizzes and exams can be a combination of multiple choice, short answers and essay question(s). Exams and quizzes should be taken on the scheduled dates. You will not be allowed to make up quizzes. Formal excuses must be given for exams that you miss. Makeup exams will be given only with prior notification. All makeup exams will be essay only and given during the last week of the semester. Unless the closure of the University is official (i.e., through announcements on radio or TV, class will not be canceled, and you will be expected to be in class.

• Bring your laboratory handouts and notebook to each laboratory session.

• Students are encouraged to work as groups; however, all reports are to be written independently.

• Proper behavior is expected during lecture and examinations. Persons caught cheating will be handled in accordance with the University's procedures for academic dishonesty.

• My home is my sanctuary. Unless you have an emergency, please do not call me at home.

• Your lack of preparation for an exam does not constitute an emergency. If you need to see me make an appointment or come by at the designated office hours.

Requirements for the Student:

1. The student should pre-study (read) all new topics before they are presented in class. You are expected to complete daily homework assignments by the time class meets the first time following discussion of lesson material in the classroom. The instructor will ascertain the daily progress in accomplishing homework exercises and will devote a portion of classroom activities to the solution of any "troublesome exercises".
2. Separate notebooks should be maintained for classroom discussion notes and homework exercises.
3. All homework should be carefully completed. A minimum of two hours outside the class preparing for each hour of class is necessary for learning and proper understanding of the material.
4. Students are strongly encouraged to participate in classroom discussions.
5. Tests will be administered during the course; also the student can expect random quizzes; a departmental final examination will also be given.
6. All cell phones, pages, etc. must be turned off before entering the classroom.
