Biology graduates include Ph.D. scientists who are employed as educators and
researchers in the public and private sectors throughout the nation. The Department's
pre-professional program contributes a significant number of major health care providers
(physicians, dentists, podiatrists, veterinarians, and pharmacists) to that critical pool of
health professionals.
A significant number of biology students have:
- Been awarded four year scholarships through the Dozoretz National Institute for Mathematics in Applied Sciences (DNIMAS).
- Gained research experiences with principal investigators within the department
- Participated in research projects through summer programs offered at major universities nationwide
- Participated in the DNIMAS Norfolk State University/Eastern
Virginia Medical School Joint Program in Medicine
- Earned credits for the Biotechnology Certificate (in addition to their bachelor's degree)
Biology students participate in the activities of:
- The Biology Society
- The Pre-Med Society
- The University's Parsons Honors Program
- The Beta Kappa Chi Scientific Honor Society
Members of the departmental faculty hold Ph.D. degrees in
specialized areas such as:
- Bacteriology
- Embryology
- Genetics
- Molecular biology
- Cell biology
- Microbiology
- Parasitology
- Anatomy and physiology
- Botany
Biology majors are provided with:
- Individual faculty advisors for curriculum and course choices, scheduling, and career opportunities
- Specialized advising for health science careers
- Access to a variety of study and tutorial resources
