Research Experiences for Undergraduates
Collaborative Research Experience in Environmental Biology


 

Norfolk State and Elizabeth City State Universities Departments of Biology (NSU) and Geological, Environmental and Marine Sciences (ECSU) are pleased to announce a 10-week collaborative research experience in Environmental Biology for twelve undergraduates. This material is based upon work supported by the National Science Foundation under Grant No 0355378.

  • Activities:
    • Each student will work as part of a research team on a project and conduct individual research projects.
    • Joint Field Trips

  • Benefits:
    • Research Experience
    • Stipend $3000 for 10 weeks
    • Room and board

  • Eligibility:
    • Interest in learning about research in environmental biology
    • Current undergraduate in good academic standing
    • Enrolled in a college or University in the United States
    • US Citizen or permanent resident of the United States
    • Required to spend 10-weeks on campus at either NSU or ECSU

  • Dr. Michael Winrow Microbiology - DNA amplification; cell culture techniques and classical sterile microbiology techniques

  • Dr. Jeffrey Rousch Plant Biology - Aquatic toxicity stress conditions to determine genes responsible for increased in tolerance; EST sequencing; cDNA libraries and heavy metals phytoremediation.

  • Dr. Roberto Frontera-Suau Microbial Genetics - PCR, DGGE, cell culturing; EST sequencing; cDNA libraries; Metabolic engineering of plants for phytoremediation
