All
chemistry majors take four basic chemistry courses.
Depending on their interests, students select from
four different curriculum options: general, organic,
physical, or analytical chemistry as part of the
American Chemical Society approved curriculum.
Chemistry majors are encouraged to participate in research projects, and have an opportunity to:
- Operate research-grade instruments
- Assist in the acquisition of original scientific knowledge
- Present research findings at regional, national or international meetings
- Work closely with a research mentor
- Receive a stipend for their work
Faculty work on research topics, such as:
- The development of a male contraceptive
- The design of new materials for faster and more efficient telecommunications
- The synthesis of novel polymers with special optical properties
Chemistry majors receive significant individual attention. They are assigned faculty advisors who
help them make various choices and suggest opportunities that they may wish to
explore, such as:
- Summer internships and fellowships
- Summer research opportunities at national laboratories
Many chemistry majors are active in professional and campus organizations such as:
- The NSU Chapter of the Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society
- The National Organization of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers
- The National Society of Black Engineers
- The Pre-Med Society
- The Beta Kappa Chi Scientific Honor Society
Recent graduates have pursued:
- The Ph.D. graduate program at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
and received a $100,000 Packard Scholarship
- The Medical Degree at EVMS and received a full scholarship
- The MBA, followed by employment at Kodak
