Practice Problems for Chapter 5
1. One slice of pepperoni pizza is burned with oxygen in a bomb calorimeter. The energy evolved is absorbed by 50.0 Kg of water which heats up from 22.0 to 31.0°C. Assuming that the slice of pizza weighs 100g and that the average molecular weight of pizza ingredients is 140 g/mole, determine the heat of combustion per mole of pizza.
2. The space shuttle utilizes oxidation of methyl hydrazine by dinitrogen tetroxide for propulsion via the equation shown below.
N2H3CH3 (l) + N2O4 (g) ---> H2O (g) + N2 (g) + CO2 (g)
a) Balance the equation of reaction.
b) The reaction produces 4742 kJ of energy when stoichiometric amounts of reactants are used.
i) Is the reaction exothermic or endothermic?
ii) Rewrite DHr° to reflect this.
iii) Calculate DHf° of N2H3CH3 (l).
3. The dilution of a concentrated sulfuric acid solution is an exothermic process.
a) A student wearing safety glasses prepared 500 mL of 0.50 M sulfuric acid from concentrated H2SO4 (18 M) and water. How many milliliters of concentrated H2SO4 did the student measure out?
b) The student added the concentrated H2SO4 to 100 mL of water initially and noted a temperature change from 20.1°C to 26.8°C. Knowing that the density of water is 1.00 g/mL, determine how much heat was generated. What assumption did you have to make to complete the calculation?
