This course is a gateway course that introduces students to the fundamentals of management and the job of the supervisor. Students from the health sciences can benefit from this course regardless of their majors because they may aspire to become supervisors or managers. |
Main Objective:
- Students should be able to understand how an organization operates and exists in terms of behavior, processes and systems, environment, and development
- Students should be able to develop the skills to work as supervisors or managers in an organization
- Students should be able to identify, critically access, and apply the concepts, techniques, and processes of management

- Apply the required skills when carrying out the planning, organizing, staffing, influencing, and controlling functions
Recognize how the five managerial functions relate to one another
- Recognize the many practices, principles, techniques, and theories of management developed from earlier concepts, and experiences

Expectations concerning Student conduct are as follows:
- Students are encouraged to actively participate in class.
- Students are expected to abide by the ACM Code of Ethics.
- Students should place phones on pager or silent mode upon entering class.

Attendance- The University expects students to attend all classes. While unnecessary absences are discouraged, the University recognizes that, on occasion, students may have legitimate reasons for being absent. Thus, a student will be permitted one unexcused absence per semester hour credit or the number of times a given class meets per week. Once a student exceeds the number of allowed unexcused absences, and instructor may require an official university excuse. No more than 20% of class meetings (excused or unexcused) may be missed by a student during the semester. At the discretion of the instructor, a student whose absences exceed 20% of scheduled class meetings for the semester may receive a grade of F for the course. (University Catalog, pg. 25). If a student misses nine clock hours of class time, the student will automatically fail the course.
Tardiness- Drills and tests in this course may not be made up. Drills are given the first 10 minutes of class.
Honesty, Honor Code, and Violations of integrity such as plagiarism-The University Academic Integrity policies relating to plagiarism, cheating, absenteeism, etc., is found in the University Student Handbook and University Catalog and will be followed.
Student class conduct (e.g., use of cell phones and electronic devices, etc.)- These devices must be turned off or silenced during class. Any student who is caught using his/her device or should it ring and disrupt class will have 5 points taken off of their next exam for each time they are caught using the device or each time that it disrupts class. (Hearing the vibrating mode also disrupts class).

As part of NSU's commitment to provide the environment and resorces needed for sucess, students may be required to

focus groups and interviews, and portolio reviews. The primary purpose of the assessment activities is to
determine the extent to which the university's programs and services maintain a high level of quality and meet
the needs of students. Students will not be identified in the analysis of results. Unless indicated otherwise,
by the instructor, results from University assessment activities will not be computed in student grades.

CLASS ATTENDANCE POLICY
A student is expected to attend all classes. The student assumes all responsibility for work missed due
to an absence. Make-up work may be permitted at the discretion of the instructor.
