NUR 150 : Syllabus
   
 

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

Nursing 150 course introduces general concepts of health and nursing and their applicability to clients of all ages located on the wellness portion of the well-illness continuum. Focuses on stages of development and maturation and the cultural influence on all age groups as a means of understanding how individuals meet their basic needs.

The nursing process is introduced. Emphasis is placed on the development of basic skills of nursing assistance to individuals striving to maintain relative status of health as they perform their activities of daily living.

This course is designed to assist the student in developing a basic knowledge and understanding of the scope and function of nursing practice and the meaning of nursing as a science. The student is taught basic skills necessary to assess the level of wellness of an individual and to assist the individual to maintain a healthy state.

  1. Perform basic nursing interventions without hazard to self or others
  2. Use the nursing process to assist an individual with selected deficits in meeting universal self-care requisites
  3. Assess individuals throughout the lifespan, using developmental and maturational theories
  4. Apply Maslow's hierarchy of needs in setting priorities for nursing care of selected individuals
  5. Incorporate effective communication skills when setting priorities for nursing care of selected individuals
  6. Identify ethical and legal concepts that form the foundation of accountability in nursing practice
  7. Use feedback and constructive criticism to promote personal and professional growth
  8. Define the role of the nurse as an independent and interdependent member of the health team
  9. Develop and understanding of the university with regard to organizational structure, policies, and procedures
  10. Develop skills and competencies required for careers with regards to trends, value clarification, skills, and techniques necessary for career assessment
  11. Enhance retention through the application of study strategies and survival skills to academic and social situations on the campus and in the community
  12. Recognize diversity to develop an understanding and tolerance for diversity and to effectively deal with diversity on campus and in the community
  13. Apply critical thinking and problem-solving to everyday situations encountered by students.

GRADING CRITERIA:

An oveall grade of 78% or above is needed to pass NUR 150 and to pass NUR 150L. A grade of P (Pass) or F (Fail) will be awarded for NUR 150L. Students earning a 78 or higher will receive a grade of P. Students earning less then a grade of F in NUR 150L. Students must pass both courses in order to progress to the next clinical nursing course, NUR 160 and NUR 160L in the spring semester. The grading scale for the Department of Nursing is listed in the Associate Degree Student Handbook.

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITY:

  1. Each student is responsible for the materials contained in this course outline and the Associate Degree Student Handbook
  2. Prior to the first class session, each student is responsible for submitting and maintaining evidence of current:
    • CPR certification: Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers
    • Malpratice Insurance: $2 Million/$4 million
    • Health Record including documentation of required immunizations and/or titers

COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY REQUIREMENTS:

Although use of a computer is not required for this course,basic computer literacy is necessary to log on to "Blackboard", and to the LS-RN exams.

HONOR CODE:

All students are expected to maintain high ethical and moral standards. A very important component of this is the Honor Code. All students are expected to support the following statement in written work, quizzes, and examinations.

"On my honor, I do pledge to do work to the best of my ability with NO assistance on graded assignments or tests. I also pledge to report any breach of the honor code to the appropriate faculty member." University and departmental procedures are outlined in the University and Nursing Department Student Student handbook.

All papers and written work are due by the assigned date and time. NO LATE PAPERS WILL BE ACCEPTED.

ATTENDANCE POLICY

Attendance will be taken daily. Students are expected to attend class unless they have an official excuse. Students that have not attended class by the 3rd week of the semester will be dropped form the class roster.

If a student is going to be absent for a test or examination he/she must notify the instructor within twenty-four (24) hours of the missed exam. (Refer to the Nursing Department Handbook, page 21). The student should plan to be tested upon his/her return to school or should make alternative arrangements for testing with the instructor. Failure to take the test per the above guidelines will result in the loss of five(5) points per day (excluding holidays) until arrangements to take the test are made.

Students will not be allowed to any absences from the clinical area. If a student must be absent for illness or other unavoidable circumstances, that student may be required to make up the lost day at his/her own expense. Students with excessive absences from any clinical course may receive a falling grade,if the instructor determines that the absences have interfered with the student's completing the clinical objectives of the course. If a student is going to be late for clinical experience, he/she must notify the clinical instructor the night before.

Clinical attendance is vital for successfully meeting the clinical objectives. Students are expected to be on time for all classes and clinical experiences.

Class attendance is governed by the University's policy. " Not more than 20% of meetings (excused /or unexcused) may be missed by a student during a given semester. At the discretion of the instructor, a student whose absences exceed 20% of scheduled class meeting for the semester may receive a grade of "F" for the course. UNIFORM CRITERIA:

Students should obtain and wear the specified school uniform or other appropriate attire at all times in the clinical area. Female students are allowed to wear one pair of small earrings, plain band ring, short fingernails with clear polish, (NO ARTIFICIAL and/or ACRYLIC NAILS). No perfume is allowed, no hair or body jewelry. Male students are not allowed to wear earrings. All students must have their hair off the collar and all students must wear white nursing shoes (no tennis shoes) in the medical surgical clinical setting. (see Department Student Handbook 2002-2004, pg. 24)

This syllabus is an announcement of present course requirements and policies only. Implicit in each student's enrollment is an agreement to comply with the course requirements and policies, which the professor may modify to exercise properly his/her educational responsibility.
An original and a copy of all written assignments are required and needs to be given to the instructor at the same time. Further, the copy of written assignments becomes the property of the Department of Nursing.

UNIVERSITY ASSESSMENT STATEMENT
